❖ It gives me great pleasure to be part of this important ceremony
today where we are awarding prizes for the ‘Pay Your Rates and
Win competition’.
❖ Over the years Council has always encouraged property owners
within the Mbabane urban area to pay their rates within the
stipulated deadline in line with the Rating Act of 1995. Paying your
rates within the stipulated period is not only your duty as a property
owner, it enables Council to carry out her responsibility to deliver
quality service to residents of the city. May I also remind ratepayers
that Council is presently undertaking a updating of the General
Valuation Roll. This is being done by professional valuers who are
expected to assess the present value of each property in the
Municipal area. This will ensure that each property owner is fairly
assessed for rates in the coming years. I urge each property owner
to cooperate with the valuers.
❖ The competition has become one of the key strategies that Council
uses for timeous property rates collection within the first quarter and
the response is always impressive and on behalf of the Council, I
thank all of you for being rates paying residents of the capital city of
the Kingdom of Eswatini.
❖ Due to financial challenges brought about by the Covid-19
pandemic, Council has had to categorize entrants for this year’s
competition into two (2) groups namely: those who paid rates by 30th
June 2020 and those who paid rates by 31st October 2020.
❖ In the previous financial year, entrants for this competition were
1,939 in total with a revenue contribution of E9.5 million against a
target of E9.0 million.
❖ This year, Council recorded a total of 3,055 entrants for the
competition with a revenue contribution of E15.9 million against a
target of E12 million.
❖ Council would therefore like to appreciate all ratepayers who have
settled their bills for the financial year and further urge those that are
still lagging behind to follow suit.
❖ I also would like to congratulate all the winners of the competition
present here today to receive their prizes. We hope you will enjoy
your different prizes and be encouraged to stay up to date with your
rates payments.
